A Survey of Hopital Infection Management on Nursing Procedure in a General Hospital

Abstract
The author performed this study to have basic data of efficient improvement measure for prevention of hospital infection, to evaluate the methods used on nursing procedures in a general hospital. The subject of this study were 180 nurses who were working on the wards, intensive care unit, emergency room of a general hospital in the T city. Data were collected by means of a self recorded questionnaire from September 1 to 15, 1998.
The result of the study were summarized as follows :
1. On the management of venous infusion, custody of opened fluid, change of IV route, change of IV set, observation of IV site, custody of opened ampule were well managed over 87% of all surveyed sample, but the proper open time of fluid was poor managed in 31.6% and handwashing before the IV procedure was poor managed in 57.2%.
2. In the time of the handwashing, "on hands contamination was showed in 26.6%, using paper towel was showed 31.7%, and handwashing management was poor.
3. In the management of Foley catheter, closed system and perineal care was rather managed in 94.3%. but the sterilization process of urine bag clamp before and after urine emptying was poor in 10.7%.
4. In the handle of dressing appliances, dressing cart, validation of sterilization date, transfer forcep, cotton can was well managed.
5. In the management of treatment appliances in relation to upper respiratory tract. ventilator body and set was well managed, but humidifier. suction tube and set management was poor.
In conclusion, unsafe nursing procedures were reported for proper open time of fluid handwashing, aseptic urine emptying, management of dressing cart, humidifier cleansing and water change, aseptic suction and it should be considered that required education for accurate surgical operation and systematical infection prevention guideline about aseptic urine emptying and suction. needed continuous infection management activity and study.
